| Travel Sickness |
|
Norman, a 20-year old student has suffered from chronic travel sickness all his life and was about to go on a summer holiday to Spain. He wasn’t looking forward to the flight or the long car ride in Spanish heat at the other end. Aspect 1We talked about the times when he had experienced the nausea and of those the one that was most intense, which he wanted to work on first was when he had gone on the waltzers at the RAF Cosford air show last year. He hadn’t wanted to go on but was goaded into it by his girlfriend. He was feeling decidedly unwell when he came off.We measured the intensity level (MIL) by using his arm as an indicator whereby hand resting on knee is zero, no intensity at all, and at shoulder height is 10, the worst it could feel thinking about it now. He said it was a 7. He chose his own words for the setup phrase and whilst circling the TP in the crease of the shoulder with the first two fingers he said chose the phrase for the RARP and focal statement as ‘spinning at the airshow extremely heavy headed’ and we first did the RARP . Then a round of FreewayCER saying the focal statement at each point, followed by a yawn. I noticed that it was very hard for him to yawn and he was basically faking it. Then we took a MIL by raising his arm to the seven level and getting him to say “I was a seven, where do I now feel I have gone down to?” He let his arm drop a fair way and said “three.” Then we did another round of FreewayCER with the focus phrase “decreased spinning at the airshow extremely heavy headed.” This time the MIL stayed the same at 3, so we did the RARP, basically the same as the setup but with “decreased spinning at the airshow extremely heavy headed.” Another round of FreewayCER and the MIL came down to 2. I asked him if he wanted to take it to zero and he did, so we did another round but it stayed at 2. I noticed he still wasn’t yawning very well. So we did the RARP again and another round of FreewayCER took it down to zero. Then we did the in-voicing procedure Aspect 2Next he wanted to address the time about seven years previously when he had been to Greece on a family holiday and has been feeling not well on the flight there and back. He wanted to deal with the return flight first. Using the RARP/focus phrase “stuck on the plane from Cos” with an initial MIL of 8, a round of FreewayCER reduced it to 5. The next round with “decreased stuck on the plane from Cos” reduced it to 2. He said he wanted to take it to zero so another round (“tiny stuck on the plane from Cos”) reduced it to 1, and a final round (“minute stuck on the plane from Cos”) brought it to zero. Then we did the in-voicing.Aspect 3The next one that he wanted to tackle was from when he was 8 or 9 years old and he went on the waltzers in a park in Crewe in bonfire night and came off feeling “very horrible.” The RARP/focus phrase he chose was “spinning on bonfire night” and the initial MIL was 6. One round of FreewayCER educed it to 2 and second round with “decreased spinning on bonfire night” took it to zero, so we in-voiced it.Aspect 4Now he wanted to address the flight to Greece, which he called “stuck on the plane to Cos” for the setup and focus phrase. The initial MIL was 3 and a single round of FreewayCER reduced it to zero. We did the in-voicing as usual.I asked which of the other items we had discussed held any emotional intensity for him as he thought about them now. He said there was only one that held just a bit of feeling for him, which was from when he was 4 or 5 years old and it was his Dad’s first car. It was the first time he can remember being in a car and they went to a caravan in Prestatyn. He called it “poorly in the car” for the RARP and focus phrases. The initial MIL was only 1 and one round of FreewayCER took it to zero, then we did in-voicing. He said that there were no other occasions that he could think of that caused him any discomfort to think about any more. I asked him to phone me after the trip to Spain to let me know how he got on. He called a few weeks later to let me know that he had had no problem on the plane or in the car and was delighted. But he said he still wouldn’t be going back on the waltzers any time soon. |
