'Z' is a 33year old lady whom I treat regularly at the local Multiple Sclerosis Centre. She has Devicks disease, the symptoms are very similar to MS in her case affecting the spinal cord and optic nerve. As part of her ongoing treatment she has to attend hospital every three moths for a plasma exchange. We chatted prior to her usual shiatsu treatment and she told me that she was not going to go back into hospital any more as she could not face any further treatment. This is her story. On her last hospital visit the doctor decided to insert a central line (a cannula into an artery) to provide the plasma through as her veins were becoming more inaccessible owing to the repeated intravenous infusions being introduced. The insertion of the central line was difficult for the doctor to perform. Following this the central line cannula was left in situ for the next visit in three months time. District nurses were calling to flush the cannula out ( this maintained patency)and to check for possible infection. However over Christmas 'Z' developed an infection in the cannula site for which she was admitted into hospital. This proved to be a very traumatic experience for her. She is unable to sleep properly at night as every time she closes her eyes she remembers her hospital experience this is making her very tired. I asked what is it that she remembers – apparently she had a very severe infection which made her shake, she had recurrent muscle spasms but was unable to move her body apart from the involuntary movements. Her speech disappeared, her breathing was very laboured, she was hallucinating due to her fever which was difficult to control and she had dots in front of her eyes. I empathised that this must have been very frightening for her and asked if she would like to try Freeway-cer to help her through these emotions- she agreed. I explained the tapping procedure and the mil reading and proceeded to ask how she felt about her experience. She said that she felt very upset about the whole thing, that she felt angry about it. I asked who she felt angry with –she said the district nurses for letting her get an infection and herself for allowing the doctor to insert the central line as she was not keen on the idea in the first place. She says that she is anxious in case it happens again. I asked how she would like to express this and the mil reading for each. Feels upset about hospital experience mil reading 10 Angry with district nurses 7 Angry at self 5 Anxious in case hospital experience happens again 10 Upset hospital experience 10 1st round 7 2nd round smaller upset hospital experience 6 3rd round Slightly smaller upset hospital experience 4 4th round even smaller upset hospital experience 1 5th round tiny 0 We had a big yawn and laughed. Invoicing I have now let go of feeling anxious about hospital experience happening again forever on all levels of my being and through all times past ,present and future. I asked 'Z' if she would like to work on her anger now, she turned and looked at me ,a big smile came over her and she said I don’t feel angry any more. Look I'm smiling. I asked her how do you feel then, she replied I feel very calm inside. I asked how she felt about the district nurses and her infection –she replied well it was just one of those things. Before 'Z' left I taught her the calm routine and we went through the Chi Gung 3,2 1 technique together to help combat her tiredness and aid her immune system. At the next appointment 'Z' was had been pleased with how she felt that she bought me a bouquet of flowers and said that she had slept well and was so pleased as she thought that she would never get rid of those horrible memories. She was close to tears as she said this and I was very touched by her emotions so I gave her a big hug in thanks. Since this session I’ve also taught her the micro cosmic orbit meditation which she finds increases her energy levels in the mornings. She is very well at the moment and not in need of any hospital intervention.
